Ford with external partners develops new, cost-optimised carbide-based multi-layer surface coating systems, applied by high-performance laser cladding.

The technology addresses the important topics of reduction of brake emissions of road vehicles and improvement of corrosion resistance, especially important for electrified cars.

The paper presents the current status of the development including brake dynamometer performance, wear, crack initiation and corrosion test results as well as metallographical analysis of different matrix materials and carbide compositions.
